Asp.net moving too fast?

Anyone else finding the introduction of new versions of the framework hard to keep up with? It seems like I only learn one quarter of the latest version before a new one is introduced

I know what you mean. I had just got my head around 1.1 when I had to go back and absorb 2.0. Now we have ASP.NET Features, AJAX, Silverlight, Microformats, Semantic Web, etc., to get our head around. However, I truly believe that it will be worth the effort to learn the new stuff. RIAs are our future :-)

Worth the effort yes, probably, but who has the time to keep up with it all?

You know, this echoes some of my sentiments exactly. I was thinking about writing a blog entry about this but I didn't want any other .NET developers thinking that I am crazy. I spend a lot of time adding .NET sites to stumbleupon and I probably do more reading on the subject than I do actual coding at this point.

I just started using Visual Studio 2005 (upgraded from 2003), and now 2008 is coming out so I have to adjust to a brand new IDE. I just started getting to know and understand the ASP.NET 2.0 frameworks (roles, membership, web parts) and now I find out that .NET 3.5 is going to be coming off the block soon and half the practices I'm employing now may be replaced by something better.

I think the ASP.NET evolution is fascinating but it's occuring at such a rapid pace that anything you develop in one year will be replaced by something much better within 3 or 4 years.

At the same time, if I get ahead of the .NET curve now, that'll give me an opportunity to stand out as a .NET developer.

Yes. I really believe that you have to approach learning as fun if you want to avoid going crazy! I'm doing very little coding these days... most of my time is spent setting up SharePoint on VMs. But I guess it's better than doing up Web content all day?!!
